Why are you passionate about education and teacher development?

Every child, no matter their socio-economic status, deserves the right to attain an excellent education! An education is the fundamental instrument for getting out, and staying out, of generational poverty. My passion for education and teacher development stems from a desire to give back something that I was given, an opportunity. In order to close the achievement gap, classrooms necessitate excellent teachers that can build transformational relationships with their students, fellow faculty members, and community. Teach ’em up!

Describe a successful teaching strategy that you used in the classroom or that you frequently recommend to your teachers.

Positive framing, hands down! If you frame all situations positively, no matter how small, expect the results to exceed your expectations. Developing a classroom culture in which students are eager and enthusiastic about learning will not only make your experiences as a teacher more enjoyable, but will lead your students to higher levels of academic achievement.

If you had to describe your work on the TEam in three words, what would they be?

Transformational, Humbling, and Empowering

What advice would you have for an educator that aspires to become an instructional leader?

Seek out as much feedback as possible on your instructional practices. We all have ways to improve, so be willing to continuously implement changes in order to progress your students’ learning. Further, we learn and grow from our collective vision in preparing students to be college-ready, so be willing to take part in our movement in as many ways as possible.

When you are not working on closing the achievement gap, what do you enjoy doing?

I enjoy reading, exploring the Houston food and craft beer scene, and visiting my family in Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Which TE-shirt is your favorite and why?

This was not only my first official TE t-shirt, but also speaks volumes of what we do each day at Teaching Excellence.
